Patience, repetition and ritual...

"Having originally studied experimental film-making, the Dutch designer SIMON HEIJDENS (1978-) turned to product design when studying at the Eindhoven Academy and now applies the spirit and techniques of film to the development of objects – all of which explore his “fascination with evolution” by changing over time to tell a story." Work of meticulousness and patience...

"Take a piece of A4 paper, just a normal ordinary blank one as it comes out of the copy machine tray. You can write on it, draw on it, but also cut into it. Peter Callesen does so. Since 2004 parallel to his performance practice, he has been transforming two dimensional surfaces into three dimensional sculptures by the means of a paper cutter. From the white surface of ordinary A4 paper, a narrative arises. " Camelia Jalving

Keen and meticulous work on the dictionaire Robert...

Cai Guo Quiang

Cai Guo Quiang (artiste chinois), APEC Drawings,Shanghai, China,2002

Dessins explosifs!
Explosive drawings!

"Cai Guo-Qiang was born in 1957 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China. The son of a historian and painter, Cai was trained in stage design at the Shanghai Drama Institute from 1981 to 1985 and his work has, since the outset, been scholarly and often politically charged. Having accomplished himself across a variety of media, Cai initially began working with gunpowder to foster spontaneity and confront the suppression that he felt from the controlled artistic tradition and social climate in China at the time. While living in Japan from 1986 to 1995, Cai explored the properties of gunpowder in his drawings, an inquiry that eventually led to his experimentation with explosives on a massive scale, and the development of his signature explosion events, exemplified in his series, Projects for Extraterrestrials. These explosion projects, both wildly poetic and ambitious at their core, aim to establish an exchange between viewers and the larger universe around them. "

Su Blackwell

Su Blackwell, The Snow Queen series, book-cut sculpture, 27 x 32 x 23 cm, 2005

Travail inspirant et léger comme un rêve.
Work inspiring and light like a dream.

"Su Blackwell's work is handmade. There is something of a delicate beauty at work here. It is evocative of dream-time and puts into visual form some very transient ideas. An empty child's dress transforms into hundreds of butterflies. The work is fragile, precious. There is a desire to utilise non-art materials; she uses what is at hand. There is an obsessive, repetitive action at work, transforming the everyday into the fantastical. She transforms old books into three-dimensional theatres, and her reconstruction offers up to the viewer many questions. We can no longer physically read the book, so in that way it is made redundant; and yet on another level it has taken on a new life and is telling a different story. Her work gives a new dimension to the rich European tradition of storytelling: in the early 1880s Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm published Grimm's Fairy Tales, a collection of folk stories, and Hans Anderson wrote 135 Fairy Tales between 1835 and his death in 1875. In many of these so-called 'Fairy Stories' there is a darker side, far removed from the Wonderful World of Disney." Steffan Jones-Hughes 2006
